When couples decide to elope, one of the first decisions they will make is where it will take place. Choosing an elopement location is an important decision and will set the tone for your special day, but it doesn’t need to be stressful. When my husband and I decided to elope, we knew we wanted something different. We didn’t choose a place we had history with, as we wanted a place we had never seen, somewhere we could begin our greatest adventure together, and a place we’d always want to return to.
We imagined a backdrop that felt like it was straight out of The Searchers, a classic western film with vast desert landscapes, towering rock formations, and scenery that felt untouched. That’s how we landed on Sedona, Arizona for our elopement.
Once we decided, we didn’t tell anyone. There were no invitations, no big plans – just a day completely focused on us. However, our research on the location did uncover that Arizona requires witnesses. Therefore, we invited Jace’s best friend to officiate and our parents to join us. It was simple, intimate, and perfect in every way. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a single thing. We didn’t just pick a place – we picked an experience. Now, every time we go back, we get to relive that feeling all over again.
I want this for all my couples, which is why as an elopement photographer, I help couples with all of it – location scouting, research, permits, planning, and making sure their day is stress-free. However, if you’re just starting to dream about where to elope, I thought since March is our anniversary month, it would be the perfect time to share what I’ve learned about choosing an elopement location, along with photos from another stunning Sedona elopement I recently photographed.

4 Tips for Choosing an Elopement Location
1. Focus on the Experience, Not Just the View
A stunning backdrop is important, but the feeling of a place matters just as much. Your elopement location should reflect the kind of experience you want – whether that’s standing on a cliffside at sunrise, exchanging vows under towering pines, or saying “I do” on a secluded beach. The right location isn’t just about the scenery—it’s about the energy it brings to your day.

2. Consider Accessibility Without Sacrificing Adventure
One of the biggest perks of eloping is that you get to choose exactly who is (or isn’t) there. Some couples want an intimate day with no guests, while others invite a few close family members or friends. Either way, your guest list plays a big role in choosing a location.
If you’re keeping it intimate with just the two of you, your options are wide open – you can pick a remote spot, hike to a private overlook, or exchange vows somewhere completely secluded.
However, If you’re inviting a few guests, you have to think about accessibility, as some locations may require a long drive, steep trails, or permits for a larger group. Researching beforehand can ensure everything goes without a hitch and you select the right spot for vision.
Renting a cabin or Vrbo near your location can be a great way to bring a small group together while still keeping the elopement itself intimate. I recently photographed a beautiful New Mexico micro wedding where the couple rented a Vrbo to celebrate with a group of their loved ones. The location was exactly what they envisioned and it allowed them to still have an intimate ceremony, as well as a place to celebrate afterwards.

3. Think About the Season, Privacy, and Timing
Many of the most breathtaking elopement spots are also the most popular, which isn’t ideal if you want an intimate experience without crowds. When it comes to planning, timing is everything. Keep in mind that weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends. Choosing a sunrise or sunset ceremony can make all the difference – not just for lighting but for having the place to yourselves. Also, many well-known locations have hidden trails or lesser-known spots that offer the same incredible views with more privacy.
The time of year can also significantly influence your elopement experience. While we all know weather can be unpredictable, it is important to research the seasonal weather patterns of your chosen location to ensure it aligns with your vision. This Sedona elopement was shot in January, which can be chilly but usually isn’t unbearable, however as you can see there was a little snow on the ground!

4. Stay True to What Feels Right for You
At the end of the day, the best elopement locations aren’t about what’s trendy or Instagram-worthy. The right location should fit you. If you’ve always dreamed of saying your vows on a mountaintop, go for it. If a cozy desert canyon or a remote forest feels more like you, lean into that. This is your day, and no place is off limits.
For us, Sedona was the perfect mix of adventure, cinematic beauty, and timeless western charm. It wasn’t just a pretty place – it was a setting that felt like us – like our story. Whatever location you choose, make sure it’s somewhere that excites you, somewhere that makes you pause and think, this is it.
