Knik Glacier Helicopter Elopement in Alaska

Some wedding days are beautiful.

Others feel like an adventure from the moment you wake up.

Bryce and Sedona’s Knik Glacier helicopter elopement was one of those days.

Instead of a packed wedding timeline, they spent the morning together in a cozy cabin outside of Palmer, Alaska. A slow morning, a quiet first look, and the excitement of knowing that in just a few hours they’d be exchanging vows on one of the most incredible landscapes Alaska has to offer.

This was my first Alaska elopement and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. By the end of the day, I was already hoping it wouldn’t be my last.

A Slow Morning in a Cozy Alaska Cabin

One of my favorite parts of Bryce and Sedona’s day had nothing to do with the glacier.

It was the morning.

Instead of rushing from hotel rooms to a venue, they spent the morning together in a cozy cabin surrounded by Alaska’s mountains. Hair and makeup arrived, coffee was made, details were scattered across the cabin, and everything felt relaxed.

That’s one of the things I love most about elopements.

There’s room to slow down.

The timeline isn’t built around entertaining hundreds of guests or making sure dinner starts on time. It’s built around the two of you.

If you’re planning an Alaska elopement, I’d recommend considering a cabin or Airbnb over a traditional hotel. Not only does it create a beautiful backdrop for getting ready photos, but it also gives you a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the start of your wedding day.

Taking a Helicopter to Knik Glacier

After getting ready, we made our way to Alaska Helicopter Tours in Palmer.

Before boarding, everyone checked in, signed waivers, and was weighed so the pilots could safely balance the helicopters. The process was straightforward and before long we were climbing in for the flight to Knik Glacier.

The flight itself took around twenty minutes, and it became part of the experience rather than simply transportation.

Looking out the window, I remember thinking the crevasses didn’t seem all that large from above.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Landing on Knik Glacier

The moment the helicopters touched down, everything changed.

Pictures simply don’t prepare you for the scale of Knik Glacier.

Before we started exploring, we slipped microspikes over our shoes to make walking on the glacier easier. I’d never worn them before, but they made a huge difference and allowed us to comfortably explore the ice.

One thing that surprised me most wasn’t the cold. It was how calm it was.

A Wedding Day Unlike Any Other

Bryce and Sedona exchanged vows surrounded by towering ice, bright blue melt pools, and mountains stretching in every direction.

For them, choosing to elopement meant stripping away everything that wasn’t important. Instead of planning a day around guests, seating charts, and a packed timeline, they built their wedding around the experience they wanted to have together.

After their ceremony, we spent the rest of our time on the glacier taking portraits and soaking in the views before climbing back into the helicopters.

It’s easy to see why more couples are choosing intimate wedding days like this. When the focus stays on the two of you, there’s space to slow down, be present, and enjoy the experience together.

Would I Recommend a Knik Glacier Helicopter Elopement?

Absolutely.

After photographing Bryce and Sedona’s wedding, I can confidently say this is one of the most unforgettable ways to get married.

If your dream wedding looks less like a traditional wedding day and more like an unforgettable experience, it’s hard to imagine a better place to get married.

What surprised me most wasn’t the scenery—I expected Alaska to be beautiful. It was how naturally the entire day unfolded. The helicopter ride wasn’t just transportation, it became part of the experience. From taking off in Palmer to landing on the glacier, every part of the day felt intentional.

If you’re considering a Knik Glacier helicopter elopement, my biggest piece of advice is this: don’t think of it as just a ceremony location. Build your day around the experience. Spend the morning in a cozy cabin, enjoy the helicopter flight, take your time on the glacier, and let the entire day become part of the story.

Long after the flowers have dried and the dress is packed away, I don’t think Bryce and Sedona will remember every portrait we took.

I think they’ll remember flying over Alaska, standing together on a glacier, and beginning their marriage in a place they’ll never forget.

Planning Your Own Knik Glacier Helicopter Elopement

If you’re dreaming about a Knik Glacier helicopter elopement, here are a few things I’d recommend after photographing one firsthand.

Give yourself as much time on the glacier as your budget allows. The helicopter ride is incredible, but once you land, you’ll wish you had more time. If you have the option to extend your glacier landing, it’s worth considering. You’ll have more time for portraits, your ceremony, and simply taking in a place that doesn’t feel real.

Dress for the conditions—but don’t overdo it. September was much calmer than I expected. We layered up before landing, but I ended up taking layers off once we started walking around. Comfortable shoes are a must, and your helicopter company will provide microspikes so you can safely walk on the ice.

Choose a cabin if you can. Bryce and Sedona’s cozy cabin made the entire day feel relaxed from the start. It gave them a beautiful place to get ready, share a first look, and ease into the day before heading to the helicopter base.

Turn your wedding into a trip. One of the best parts about eloping in Alaska is that your wedding becomes part of a bigger adventure. Spend a few extra days exploring, visit places you’ve always wanted to see, and make memories beyond the ceremony itself.

Don’t panic if rain is in the forecast. We had plenty of gloomy weather, and honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. The low clouds, moody skies, and crisp air are part of what makes Alaska feel so unforgettable.
